2EZ Contest Question # 5
Waited just for you Ninetailedfox100
Q: In this graph, what is the Limit of f(x) as x approaches 1 (as x approaches from both sides)?
EDIT: To Show what this might look like as a problem
Replace alpha with 1 and add an equals sign at the end.
Will accept 3 attempts at this question, as it is on the hard side for some people.

HA! Google wont work this time! Better start to understand Limit functions.

Just wondering, what level of math is this? Like algebra 2, etc

It counts as 1 of your 3, but it was wrong.

Re: 2EZ Contest Question # 5
pyrot, i am not going to PM you shit because it's a waste of time and i think others would like to see my take on this question.
i haven't taken "calculus" in several years, and WITHOUT the aid of google or any aids in my interpretation of this problem, i am going to try and solve it from memory alone.
this problem should be easier than it looks because it does NOT give you the "formula" for the function... such as lim x-->1 f(x) = x+1 .... instead, it just gives you lim x-->1 f(x) = ?
WHICH would indicate to me, you do not need to perform any math operations whatsoever - rather, you just look at the graph and interpret the answer from what's already listed (enlisting the aid of math knowledge in justification of the answer)... SO, without googling:
MY ANSWER: You note the point (1, 3) ... there's a filled in point which means the function is defined at that point, yet NOT defined at the hollow-points of "4" and "2" on the y-axis. so as x approaches "1" (on the x-axis) from the LEFT, it approaches "2" but it can't because "2" is hollow - instead, it should approach "3" since it is filled. when the function approaches "1" (on the x-axis) from the RIGHT, it approaches "4" but it can't because "4" is hollow - instead it should approach "3" since it is filled. so the limit is defined since it has the same value as it approaches from both left/right sides, so my answer is "3". i may be wrong, but that is my justification.

3rd person to show understanding of the problem gets the points.
While 3 is the wrong answer it showed you understood it, more than most of the others. The other two people that answered gave me the limits while appraoching form the left (-) and right (+), I didnt specify so I guess you could get confused. The function as it approaches from both the right and left do not hit the same point. It was kind of a trick question as with that being said the limit does not exist. While f(1) is 3 (filled in dot) (f(x) --> 1 does not exist because the limit is as it approaches 1, not while it is at 1, so the white dots indicate the closest x gets to 1 from both sides and being two different values it does not exist. It does not exist if there were an asymptote or jump in the graph either.

so the filled in point (1, 3) is a trick, as the graph "literally" approaches "2" from the left and "4" from the right, it doesn't even matter if the points are hollow or not, as the limit DNE either way. lol gotta love how such a graph tricks you. that's ok, even though i got it wrong i at least made sense.
next time give us limit problems that actually give you the formula of the function.
